İstanbul Architecture Festival is organized by Arkitera Architecture Center to show that architecture in İstanbul, which occupies an important place in the world with its cultural activities, is not only represented by the monuments of the past but is regarded as a living process.
It is aimed for the festival, which is going to take place for the first time in 2004 during the first week of October, to accomplish its purpose by using the internal dynamics of architecture.
The festival will stress the distinct position of architecture both in its relationship with the characteristics of our physical surroundings and in architecture as a cultural act. In 2004 İstanbul Architecture Festival will take place between 4th and 9th of October with Aykut Köksal's curatorship. The week, starting on the United Nations' World Habitat Day will end with an Architecture Party on the 9th of October. İstanbul will live with architecture for a week with architecture meetings, panels, film screenings, exhibitions, excursions and other activities.
Another significant aspect of theFestival is its participation to the 1st European Architecture Festival which is organized by issue that makes the festival, which is one of the largest activities of GAUDI Network (Governance, Architecture and Urbanism as Democratic Interaction), which is supported by the European Union's Culture 2000 program and of which Arkitera Architecture Center has been a member since March 2004.
